Organizing Your Home For WAHM Success
If you’re a work at home mom, one of the hardest things to do is balance family time, work time, and doing the chores around the house. There’s nothing worse than you finally sitting down to work thinking you’re going to be all productive and then one of the kids comes in and says “Mom, I’m Thirsty” or your husband says “Hey, honey, do you know where that thing that I’m always looking for and never know what I did with it is?”
Yeah, all of that is pretty extremely frustrating when you are trying to run a business!
So what do you do?
Well, one of the things I found to help immensely was to start cleaning and really organizing the house.
I made it so all of the kid’s toys are well organized. They can reach the bottom shelves and get any toys they can play with without supervision any time they want.
Then I made sure I started a schedule for cleaning the house. Obviously, you can’t always stick to it every day or every week, but I’ve found just knowing that “today is vacuum day” or “this is laundry day” is helping us tremendously in knowing what we need to do and need to get done.
The other thing, which was probably the most difficult to do, was that we started organizing our closets. Thankfully there are people online who are really organized and can give us all some tips and ideas! Now I have a set spot in my closet that is part of my office (I know, that’s probably strange sounding, but I needed someplace to store papers and such that the kids wouldn’t get into!) I also took some time to organize all the other closets in our house, since that made more room for all of our stuff. And all of this added room means less clutter - and less clutter means less time spent cleaning!
It’s not absolutely essential to have an organized home for success to work at home. But if you find yourself not having enough time or constantly looking for the stuff you need - it can save you a lot of time - and probably mean increased productivity too.

Being a Stay at Home Mom in Business
It is not easy being a mom in business, especially if you are a stay at home mom and have kids under the age of 5. There’s nothing quite like trying to take important phone calls and of course at that choice moment your child, who had been previouly happy and satisfied, begins having a melt down.
So what do you do? Here are some tips for being a mom in business:
1. Send the Kids Away: Sure, you can try to get some work done at home with the kids, since that is the whole reason that many moms start working from home or start their own business in the first place. But for your own sanity and productivity’s sake, have someone else watch the kids for a set time every week. You’ll thank yourself for it.
2. Set Regular Working Hours: If you work at home, it’s easy to get in the trap of not working enough or even possibly working too much. By setting regular hours you can have much better results and have a little order to your life and schedule.
3. Explain to Others That You Work: It’s hard for many to understand that you work from home and they will often call you to see if you can do them favors or activities. You’ll have to practice a few times saying “no, I can’t, I have to work” just as you would say if you had to go to a office everyday.
4. Keep Kids Occupied: When kids are occupied, the more work you can do. Have older kids help younger kids play games or do activities. Make sure your kids are in sight for safety reasons. Sometimes hiding a box of old toys and then pulling it out one day can be a great way to keep them entertained for hours, since they’ve found some “new toys”.
